Installing Chair rail for wall protection and aesthetic appeal

Stock profiles or custom assembled Moldings

Standard stock chair rail is typically narrow and it's usually a good idea
to install blocking between studs if you have that option available. When
narrow chair rail molding is only nailed to studs, it can bow easily and often leads to
unsightly gaps. Larger molding is less likely to bow and can be nailed to
studs only.

Chair rail installation begins with a level line

For most chairs, 32 to 36 inches is the typical height above the floor.
Use a laser or a chalk line to find your chair rail line. Before installing
be sure to prime any molding that is to be painted later. Nail single
molding every 8 inches into the blocking or stud. Two nails should be used to
prevent bowing. Screws can be used for extra holding power.

If you are installing two pieces of molding for a combo chair rail, place the
first piece on your line, nail it, then nail your cap molding to finish.

Butting chair rail to door casing or window trim requires a choice:
  • Butt directly to your door or window casing.
  • Notch out your rail piece so that it protrudes onto your existing trim.

Choosing your chair rail and installing it by yourself can be done by most
homeowners. Pick out straight moldings and keep it level !!
